from 20cm / approx. 20 liters

Here you will find a wide range of aquarium inhabitants (fish, crabs, shrimp, and more) suitable for aquariums with a minimum size of 20 cm / approximately 20 liters. However, please note that such a small "glass" only allows for limited design and may be slightly more difficult to handle for beginners. Small "slip-ups" have a stronger effect on the small aquarium volume than on larger aquariums. Furthermore, it should be noted that less surface area in the aquarium also means less space for bacteria - this means less food for grazers such as shrimp and snails. With the small size also comes the fact that very small internal filters are installed in ready-made sets, which is not conducive to the stability of the already quite small aquarium.

Minimum Dimensions and Minimum Aquarium Size

It should be noted that the minimum size of 20 cm is not a legal requirement. In Austria, the minimum sizes for keeping fish are specified in the Animal Welfare Ordinance. Here, for example, the smallest aquarium size is given as 60x30x30 - 54 liters, below which no approved fish keeping is allowed. Since we have noticed from experience that even small fish show their natural behavior best in longer aquariums, this has become an important criterion for us for appropriate animal keeping. We can therefore confidently say that we reject keeping fish from 20 cm or under 60 cm. The animals presented here are invertebrates that are not considered in the Animal Welfare Ordinance, so there are no guidelines for minimum sizes. But here too: Bigger is better.

Species Aquarium / Species Tank

We understand that some people might find a species tank - an aquarium with only one species of fish - less exciting. However, such a species tank offers the opportunity, especially in smaller aquariums, to keep animals in an appropriate manner. More emphasis is placed on an appropriate group size and water quality that meets the needs of the respective species.

It is worth mentioning here shrimp species or breeds that should be kept purebred regardless of the aquarium size if you want to maintain the color. For example, with Neocaridina dwarf shrimp, mating two color variants means that over time the original form of the algae shrimp becomes more and more prominent. The offspring will lose their color and become black, gray, brown, or olive.
